Titles: Dakota beaded bag (Supplied title)

Description: A red beaded bag made by Dakota woman Marguerite Metivier, circa 1860. The bag features blue and black glass beads in floral patterns on red field. On July 8, 1839, at age 10, Marguerite was baptized by Bishop Mathias Loras of Dubuque at Saint Peter's in Mendota. Baptism records indicate that she was "the daughter of a white man and a Sioux woman." The bag is lined with newspaper and, due to loss in some areas of the red fabric, bits of what appears to be Hindustani text are visible.
