Titles: Ribbonwork cradleboard cover (Supplied title)
Description: A cradleboard cover, blanket, or shade, possibly Dakota, circa the mid-19th century. It is made of black cotton velveteen embellished with silk ribbon applique' work, fur trade era silver brooches, and leather thong and hair tassel. It was collected during the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War by Captain Charles J. Stees of the 6th Minnesota Infantry Regiment, Company G, at Wild Goose-Nest Lake, in Dakota Territory. The donor's description reads in part "Evidently the silver buckles were obtained from some Dutch trader. The light hair (formerly a tight curl) was the curl of a little child and the dark hair is that of a white woman."
