Titles: Gum-tree mortar barrel (Supplied title)
Description: The barrel of a gum-tree mortar made from the trunk of a gum tree and bound with iron bands. It is conventionally bored with a powder chamber and vent. The mortar was used by the 7th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the 1865 Civil War siege of Spanish Fort, Alabama. The regiment's blacksmith, Private Winborn S. Marsh of Wyattville, Minnesota, reportedly built the weapon by boring the barrel with a two-inch auger and reaming it to size. It was donated by the regiment's Chaplain, Elijah E. Edwards.
