Black stone pipe bowl and stem

Titles: Black stone pipe bowl and stem (Supplied title)

Description: The prowed bowl is carved out of black stone with three inlaid lead strips in a sawtooth design at the flared top of the bowl itself. Its shank is decorated with lead, black stone and pipestone inlays. The cylindrical stem is of red-barked wood with a threaded end to fit into the shank and a whittled mouthpiece. The pipe was collected by Frank H. Kratka, who worked closely with the Ojibwe Indians in the area of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, in the late nineteenth century. Possibly Dakota or Ojibwe.
