Description: A Dakota elbow style, red pipestone pipe bowl with some mottling and flattened shaped anterior projection, circa the early to mid-19th century. Accompanying wooden flat and rectangular stem, which is partially wound in colored cord, is accessioned as 65.56.B. These pieces are reported to be the personal peace pipe of Dakota Chief Little Crow, although the original donation letter states that the owner of the pipe gave it to Susan Freneer Brown as he left his farm outside of Hutchinson for "the Agency." Little Crow did not own a farm; however, John Other Day did and had a strong relationship with the Brown family. It has been documented that Other Day paid a last visit to them before leaving for the Sisseton-Wahpeton reservation in South Dakota. It has also been documented that Herman Chilson, who donated this item, also attempted to donate a pipe which he identified as having belonged to John Other Day to the Sibley County Historical Society (which Sibley County did not receive), in years prior to this donation.
