Titles: Dakota riding whip (Supplied title)

Description: A Dakota riding quirt or whip, circa the late 19th century. It is made of a tapered wood rod encased in a snug fitting beaded leather case. This covering appears to be made from a single piece of leather sewn with sinew; it has a short leather fringe sewn on each end. The beadwork is lazy-stitched in a geometric pattern using blue, green, white and gold seed beads. Two long leather lashes hang from one end of the rod. Opposite end of the rod has a hole through which a beaded leather strap is tied. This strap is plain on one side, and completely covered with geometric pattern lane-stitch beadwork on the other, using blue, white, green and pink glass seed beads. The end of the strap is split into two beaded strips, that each have a tin jingle cone ornament with a long lock of dyed yellow horsehair projecting from the larger end.
