Description: A Dakota pincushion from the Prairie Island Indian Reservation, Minnesota, circa the 1930s. The pincushion consists of pink fabric in the shape of a heart sewn with beads reading "1934" in the upper left corner, a whirling log / whirlwind symbol in the upper right, and a diamond pattern at the center. The pincushion was donated by ethnomusicologist Frances Densmore.

  • Not earlier than 1934 - Not later than 1937 (The Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 added an additional 414 acres to the Prairie Island reservation. In 1938, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Lock and Dam Number 3, which flooded Community land including burial mounds and created a larger floodplain, leaving the tribe with only 300 livable acres.)
