Titles: Dakota war flag (Supplied title)
Description: Dakota war flag collected by Colonel Henry L. Carver, during Henry Sibley's 1863 expedition into Dakota Territory in the aftermath of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. The banner consists of a red wool band to which several dozen hawk feathers have been attached; some feathers have detached completely. Clusters of wool ribbon and porcupine quill-wrapped leather thongs (sometimes terminating in small, downy feathers) decorate the length of the band. The band's bottom edge is stitched with a leather thong.
