Titles: Dakota inlaid steel pipe axe (Supplied title)
Description: A Dakota pipe tomahawk has a forged steel head featuring a flared blade with chamfered edges, circa the mid-19th century. The left side of the blade is inlaid with the letters "P. O." in brass. The right side of the blade bears an inlaid foliate design in copper. Opposite the blade is a tall bowl with a filed band below the rim. The wood haft is drilled for smoking and decorated with file brands. The mouthpiece is formed by concave sculpting of the top and bottom sides. Collected by Colonel Henry L. Carver, during Henry Sibley's 1863 Dakota expedition.
