Titles: Dakota pipestone pipe bowl and stem (Supplied title)

Description: A Dakota pipe bowl and stem carved of pipestone (catlinite), circa the late 19th or early 20th century. The pieces would be connected at a tubular wooden peg with a second tubular peg serving as the mouthpiece. The bowl is carved with a human left hand in relief. The stem is incised with leaves and flowers as well as a human right hand grasping the neck of an aquatic bird, which is, in turn, engulfing a representation of a fish. A label glued to the stem reads: "SNAKE and HAND PEACE PIPE / Carved from PIPESTONE - / By DAKOTA SIOUX INDIAN." The pipe was donated in 1905 by Charles H. Bennett, a pharmacist in Pipestone, Minnesota.
