Dakota pipe axe

Description: A Dakota tomahawk pipe, circa the mid-19th century. It has a forged steel head and a hollow wood haft. The head has a flared, straight sided blade. The bowl has forged molding. The wood haft is hollow for smoking and is decorated with brass tacks and hot file brands.The roughly cylindrical mouthpiece is integrally carved. The pipe was collected by Adjutant Alonzo P. Connolly of the 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment, who served in the U.S-Dakota War of 1862.
