Titles: Dakota parfleche container (Supplied title)

Description: A Dakota parfleche rawhide container, circa the late 19th to early 20th century. The container consists of a piece of hide cut in the shape of a equilateral cross, with limbs folding to the center to be tied closed around the contents. The central portion of the cross, which forms the bottom of the container, is undecorated, while the surfaces of the limbs, which form the exterior, are painted in a variety of geometric designs in deep blue, orange, red, deep yellow and dark green. The longest flap folds last and has a carrying handle formed of tanned leather that has been inserted into holes four inches apart and had its ends knotted. The end of this same flap has been cut in scalloping; the point of each is pierced so that it may hold a leather thong (one of the three is missing).
