Description: A Dakota earring reportedly "taken from a chief's ear" at Standing Rock Agency by W. Hewitt in 1883. No other provenance is available. The earring consists of a knotted thin leather thong suspending two white tubular bone (hairpipe) beads and a piece of abalone shell. Each bead is broken in two but held together by the leather thong.
