Pipestone pipe bowl with decorated wood stem

Titles: Pipestone pipe bowl with decorated wood stem (Supplied title)

Description: A pipestone (catlinite) pipe bowl and wood stem, possibly Dakota, decorated with dyed horsehair, dyed quillwork and animal skin, circa the late 19th century or earlier. This pipe was acquired by Karl (Charles) Wagner of New Ulm, Minnesota, from Chief Good Thunder at the Lower Sioux Indian Community, probably on July 22, 1888 when Charles and his son George visited the reservation to ask for information regarding the remains of Charles' brother August Wagner. August, a United States Government agent on the reservation, had been among the first casualties of the 1862 U.S.- Dakota War.
