Titles: Pipestone pipe bowl and stem (Supplied title)

Description: An L-shaped catlinite pipe bowl (.A) with long wooden stem (.B), possibly Lakota, wrapped with blue, red, and orange seed beads and leather fringe, circa the mid-19th century. The pipe was collected by John B. Sanborn during the time he served as a member of the Indian Peace Commission, which negotiated treaties with several tribes between 1867 and 1869. "Spotted Elk" is scratched onto the underside of the pipe and is likely the name of the man who gave the pipe to Sanborn.
