The fragments were collected from areas of the Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. .A and .E have paper labels with descriptions in ink reading "From Tree near / Cushings Battery" and "Pickets Front July 3rd", respectively. .C has "Culp Hill" written in ink directly upon it.
