Titles: French military gas mask and case (Supplied title)

Description: French military issue gas mask consists of a rubberized fabric hood with two circular eye holes with celluloid lenses, and a padded filter bag soaked in unidentified chemicals. The mask is contained in a flat grayish cotton carrying bag with a button flap (button missing)and cloth shoulder strap. This type of mask, known as an M2, would only cover the bottom half of the head and is meant to protect the eyes, nose and mouth. The eyepieces are partially covered with an oily adhesive and visibility would have been very poor. Issued to Ezra Benham Curry of Saint Paul, Minnesota, who served with the Norton-Harjes Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps in France during World War I, circa 1917.
