Titles: Pipestone slab (Supplied title)

Description: A slab of red catlinite in its natural form, possibly Dakota quarried, circa the late 19th to early 20th century. The upper surface is weathered; the remaining surfaces show evidence of recent quarrying. Catlinite has historically been used by American Indians to make tobacco pipes and other carvings. A paper label glued to the upper surface of the slab reads, "PIPE STONE (Catlinite) / Presented by / CHARLES H. BENNETT, Pharmacist / PIPESTONE CITY, MINN."
