Titles: Ojibwe loom-woven beaded stole (Supplied title)

Description: This beaded stole features gold beaded Latin crosses worked in at both ends. Made by the wife of Eshkebugecoshe or Chief Flat Mouth and presented to Bishop Whipple by the Chief in recognition of the Bishop's intercession in behalf of the Indians thus preventing a "Pine Land Sale" by which the Indians would have been defrauded. On presenting the stole Chief Flat Mouth said: “The first time I saw you, you wore something over your robes. I thought it was a badge of your office. I asked my wife to make one for you. I give you this because you are the friend of my people."
