| Description | Bank note issued by the First National Bank of Red Wing. Denomination of five (5) dollars, issued in 1885. Obverse, in black ink: Portrait of President James Garfield within vertical oval at left. At center, reads "THE / FIRST / NATIONAL BANK / OF / RED WING / WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND / FIVE DOLLARS / Red Wing, MINNESOTA, June 28th, 1885." Undersigned by cashier and T. B. Sheldon as bank president. Treasury stamp in brown at lower right. Reverse, in dark red-brown ink: within a vertical oval at left is the Minnesota state seal with state motto "Etoile du /Norde / Minnesota" above an image of a man plowing and Native American man on horse, At right, within a vertical oval is a version of the United States seal; a bald eagle sits atop a horizontal shield. At center, printed in blue ink over a brown design is charter number 1487. Series Number 1882BB. |
