Banknote from the First National Bank of Red Wing
Description Bank note issued by the First National Bank of Red Wing. Denomination of five (5) dollars, issued in 1885. Obverse, in black ink: Portrait of President James Garfield within vertical oval at left. At center, reads "THE / FIRST / NATIONAL BANK / OF / RED WING / WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND / FIVE DOLLARS / Red Wing, MINNESOTA, June 28th, 1885." Undersigned by cashier and T. B. Sheldon as bank president. Treasury stamp in brown at lower right. Reverse, in dark red-brown ink: within a vertical oval at left is the Minnesota state seal with state motto "Etoile du /Norde / Minnesota" above an image of a man plowing and Native American man on horse, At right, within a vertical oval is a version of the United States seal; a bald eagle sits atop a horizontal shield. At center, printed in blue ink over a brown design is charter number 1487. Series Number 1882BB.
