How many of these medals were made? How were they distributed, and how many are expected to have survived?

Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, our records for this artifact do not contain answers to your questions. Commemorative medals like this one were commonly produced in the late 19th Century as souvenirs for notable regional and local events, but maker and distribution information is scarce at best. This medal was acquired in 1978 with the contents of the Harkin Store historic site in New Ulm, Minnesota. The MNHS artifact collection includes 8 medals (dated 1886-1892) related to the Minneapolis Industrial Exposition, though this is the only one published online so far. More information may be available in the Gale Family Library (http://sites.mnhs.org/library/) which holds over 20 published titles related to the expositions. If you are interested in more information on the building, please see this MNOpedia article: http://www.mnopedia.org/structure/industrial-exposition-building-minneapolis
