Description: 1862 U.S.- Dakota War fortieth anniversary commemorative badge. The disintegrated blue ribbon reads: "40th / ANNIVERSARY / INDIAN / MASSACRE /...". The medal features an image of the New Ulm Defenders Monument, erected in 1892, and reads: "INDIAN MASSACRE MONUMENT / ERECTED BY STATE OF MINNESOTA". The badge was acquired from the Harkin Store in New Ulm, Minnesota.
