Description BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Leroy Backus was born in Minot, North Dakota on March 20, 1906. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1928 and moved to Winona in 1940. He was 33 years old when he started taking flight instructions but had a life long interest in aviation. He learned to fly in Rapid City, South Dakota from a World War I pilot, Russell Hally in 1939 and soloed a J3 Piper Club and received his student's pilot's license. he started taking flight lessons from Max Conrad in 1940 with only 10 hours of flying time and received his private license in 1946 or 1947. He taught a pilot training program for flight instructors at Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota during World War II, and after that he began work with Northwest Airlines as an examiner for one of their training programs, which lasted less than a year and then worked as a liaison engineer with Northwestern Aeronautical in St. Paul for a few months. In 1949 he served as chairman of the committee that dedicated the new Max Conrad Field Airport and also was president of the Winona Flyers Association. At the time of the interview Mr. Backus was a widower living in Winona, with six living children. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: The tapes consist of Backus's biographical background and his instruction to flying, the Winona Airport fire, his experience with Max Conrad and his personal aviation experiences.
