Titles: US Army soldier's sewing kit with Sacred Heart motifs (Supplied title)
Description: United States Army soldier's homemade sewing kit or "housewife" (A) carried during World War I by James Martineau of the United States Army Medical Corps. The blackish brown corduroy kit is lined in a polished cloth and fastens closed with a dark brown ribbon with a snap sewn to each end. It is folded three times and opens to reveal three inside pockets and a handmade image of the Sacred Heart. It contains: a blunt-tipped scissors (B) marked "WESTERN/ CUTLERY Co/ GERMANY", a cylindrical metal sewing kit (C) containing a thimble and marked "COMPLIMENTS OF/ NORTHWESTERN/ TRUST CO./ ST. PAUL, MINN", a aluminum thimble (D) marked "AMERICAN RED CROSS" and "NEUTRALITY/ HUMANITY", a white thimble (E), two paper packets of H. Milward sewing needles (F-G), a paper packet (H) of straight pins from the American Pin Co., two paper packets (I-) of straight pins, a cloth packet (K) of sewing needles, a paper (L) with four safety pins, two papers (M-N) of J & P Coats white cotton thread, two spools (O-P) of J & P Coats white cotton thread, two safety pins (Q-R) of seventeen white buttons, a safety pin (S) of nine khaki buttons, a "Sacred Heart" fetish (T) with a picture of Jesus exposing his heart on the front and a close-up of the heart with religious slogans on the back. Some of the contents may be later additions.
