Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Cynthia Mayeda, a second-generation Japanese American, served as executive director of the Dayton Hudson Foundation. In that role she provided leadership in the funding of AIDS programs and services, particularly through artistic organizations. Mayeda coordinated a matching grants program through Arts Over AIDS, which provided key funding for the state's AIDS service organizations at an annual Minnesota AIDS pledge walk. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Mayeda discusses the impact of AIDS on the artistic community in Minnesota and nationally. As an activist in democratic and feminist politics, Mayeda describes the intersection of AIDS, art and communities of color. She describes her commitment to democracy, including how that commitment is based partly on her grandparents' not being allowed to become citizens. She also discusses her concern that the United States, as evidenced by growing support for anti-immigrant legislation, is moving away from its commitment to pluralism.
