Titles: German Veterans' Association flag (Supplied title)

Description: A large flag made of silk taffeta, fringed on three sides with gold silk. It has a white background ornamented with red, black and gold embroidered lettering and shield. The center features a Maltese Cross in black and white with a crown surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves and acorns. It reads, "Deutscher Krieger Verein" [German Veterans' Association] at the top and "Gegrundet den Sept, 1891, Minneapolis, Minn." at the bottom. Made by Western Badge and Novelty Company, Saint Paul, Minnesota. This flag was dedicated in St. Petri Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota. German immigrants formed the Deutscher Krieger Verein group in Minneapolis in the 1870s. It was a typical fraternal organization which had many social functions, including parades to the Lutheran church, picnics, dinners, dances, and memorial services. Parades were in full dress uniform with guns, swords and flags. The groups were disbanded in 1916 due to anti-German sentiments during World War I.
