Description: A gavel made of an oak fragment from the USS Merrimac, a steam frigate nearly destroyed in 1855 but repurposed by the Confederate Navy as the ironclad CSS Virginia. The CSS Virginia was used against the USS Monitor in the Battle of Hampton Roads during the Civil War.
