Description: Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac shamrock or trefoil-shaped badge mounted on a cross-shaped pin badge worn during the Civil War by Colonel Mark W. Downie of the 1st Minnesota Battalion. Downie served as Major with the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company B, and was wounded at Bull Run before becoming third in command at Gettysburg, where he received two wounds to the right arm, a bullet through the left foot, and a shell wound to the left lung. Downie was the first wounded field officer to return to the regiment following Gettysburg, in October of 1863. He re-enlisted as Colonel of the First Minnesota Battalion in 1865 and served through the end of the war.
