Description: Surveyor's hand compass with 32 directional subdivisions is in hinged mahogany case with a metal bar and pin to hold the compass needle stationary when the case is closed. It was used by Colonel John G. Clark for survey work on the Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan boundaries, in the Civil War, and at Fort Rice, Dakota Territory, 1865-66.
