Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Lana Anderson and her husband originally raised hogs, sheep and cattle, then grain. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: However, neither of these conventional farming operations provided sufficient net income for financial stability. In order to save the farm (then financially distressed), they obtained hardship aid from FmHA (Farmers' Home Administration) and converted to an unconventional farming operation (raising foxes). In addition, they placed most of their land in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and planted evergreens (to be harvested in 10 years as Christmas trees). These, together with maintaining at least one off the farm job and keeping a large garden have provided them with financial security. Having learned about the Farm Advocate Program in connection with their own problems, Lana has become an Advocate herself, working with other farmers in her neighborhood. She describes this as helping them face financial reality (including informing them of their rights and of available assistance) and make life decisions (based on their individual wishes). Successful outcomes vary from person to person. For some, success is remaining on their home places and continuing to farm (often at a reduced level), while for others success involves a clean break with farm life.
