Description BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Proescholdt is a native of Iowa, and graduated from Iowa State University in 1977 with degrees in history and biology. As a student, he guided canoe trips in the Boundary Waters and became interested in the various legislative bills proposed during the 1970s concerning the BWCA. He worked for the Iowa Public Interest Research Group (IPIRG) and became involved with the lobbying efforts of the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. In 1981 he joined the staff of the Minnesota chapter of the National Audubon Society. He became executive director of the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness in 1985. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: How he became involved with the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area; his experiences lobbying on behalf of the Boundary Waters; working for the Audubon Society (lobbying, testifying); major concerns of the Society (1982 acid rain control bill, state superfund bill); Friends of the Boundary Waters (structure, members, creation of group); goals of the Friends; future confrontations over the BWCA for the Friends; dealing with Minnesota's Congressional delegation; impact of the 1978 legislation, specifically fishing, resorts, and Indian community; dam removal vs. maintenance; Canadian legislation; expansion of the BWCA; Superior National Forest appeal; roadbuilding; Man in the Biosphere Program; and fire management.
