Titles American Red Cross overseas uniform
Description An American Red Cross overseas uniform in charcoal wool twill, consisting of a jacket, a skirt, an overseas cap, a shirt, a tie, and a collar. The military-cut jacket has a fitted waist and black satin lining. A "U.S." pin, an enamel Red Cross emblem pin and a foreign service metal fastened to the collar. Attached shoulder insignia is a red felt circle embroidered with a white duck board. (The donor served in Brest, France where it was extremely muddy, and duck boards were laid all over for crossing wet and muddy areas.) The ankle-length skirt has straight lines, two flap pockets sewed down single front pleat, and a front opening with snap and hook closures. The overseas cap. made by Stern Brothers, is lined in gray quilted silk and has a Red Cross emblem pin at front center. The long-sleeved, white, ribbed cotton shirt has turn-back cuffs. The black tie is from the Golden Rule, a Saint Paul, Minnesota department store. The attachable, soft white cotton collar has an Arrow brand label and was manufactured by Cluett, Peabody and Company; it features a Red Cross insignia, three pins and buttons from Stern Brothers, New York and Paris. Worn by Margaret MacLaren of Saint Paul, Minnesota during World War I, circa 1918.
