Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis Oral History Project: Interview with Gary H. Stern
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: A native Wisconsin, Mr. Stern earned an A.B. in economics from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and a Ph.D. in economics from Rice University, Houston, Texas. Prior to accepting the position as President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis in March, 1985, Stern held two different positions in the Bank, senior vice president and director of research. Before joining the Minneapolis Fed, Stern taught at New York University, and was a partner in a New York-based consulting firm. His previous experience included seven years at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. In addition to his professional activities, Stern coauthored a book with Paul DeRosa, "In the Name of Money: A Professional's Guide to the Federal Reserve, Interest Rates, and Money", and had written several journal articles. During his tenure at the Bank, Stern encouraged involvement in System responsibilities and took an active role in promoting awareness of the Minneapolis Federal Bank through enhanced publications and district dialogues with community leaders. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Stern discusses the duties of a Federal Reserve Bank president, the management and organization structure of the Bank, the various relationships within the Bank itself and the Bank within the Federal Reserve System. Stern also comments on the role that the Bank's research contributions to the Minneapolis Bank division and the implication of consolidation of automation within the System.
