Mai Yia Thao of St. Paul, Minnesota, covered this tennis ball in non-traditional cloth on December 16, 1994, for her grade school children's first practice at ball tossing at St. Paul Civic Center for Hmong New Year. Ball tossing is an ancient Hmong courtship ritual.
