Titles: Bradstreet Arts and Crafts cypress cabinet (Supplied title)
Description: The jin-di-sugi cabinet has a molded rectangular top above two sliding doors (incorporating earlier Japanese panels), framed with black lacquered wood, depicting lotus leaves and blossoms growing on a pond. The lotus leaves are rendered in medium to grayish-green tempera, with grayish olive undersides and lighter grayish olive blossoms. Across the bottom are dark grayish blue curvilinear shapes depicting water and there are also speckles of gilt paint across the width of the deep to strong brown stained panels. The rest of the cabinet exterior is stained a dark to grayish brown. The cypress has been charred and brushed with steel bristles to render a driftwood effect, as intended with the jin-di-sugi technique. The interior has three adjustable peg shelves and a central vertical, stationary panel. The shelves are adjustable and supported by round wood pegs which fit within verticles rows of holes on th einner end walls and center panel. Below the doors are six short drawers with foliate pulls; the bottom drawers are slightly deeper. The apron is carved and shaped; four scrolled feet at each corner. All NBS colors. (This chest is visible in photographs of Bradstreet's office at The Craftshouse, 327 South Seventh Street, Minneapolis, and was bequeathed by him to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in 1914.)
