Description: Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac shamrock or trefoil-shaped lieutenant's corps insignia badge. Cut from a sheet of silver, the badge is engraved "Lieut. G. Boyd Jr./ 1st Minn. Vols". It was worn by Captain George Boyd during the Civil War. Boyd enlisted with the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment on April 29, 1861, and was mustered in as a sergeant in Company E. He was hospitalized between August and December of 1862 and returned commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Boyd was wounded in the right thigh at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, but returned to active duty in October. Boyd was mustered out with the regiment on May 5, 1864, and re-enlisted in Hatch's Battalion of Cavalry.
