Description: A field barometer used by Joseph Nicollet, a French scientist and geographer, while surveying the Upper Mississippi River Valley, circa 1837. It is comprised of a glass mercury tube, thermometer, graduated scales in stained boxwood and brass housing, and a leather case with a shoulder carrying strap.
