Description Copper token dating to the Civil War. Its front is engraved with a rendering of the American flag surrounded by a halo of 13 stars, the phrase "The flag of our union," and the year 1863. Its back is engraved with the sentence, "If anybody attempts to tear it down / shoot him on the spot" and the name "Dix" (for United States Secretary of the Treasury John Adams Dix). The remark engraved on the token has been attributed to Dix.
