Each of the first day of issue 5c postage stamps in the framed pane depicts a silhouette of a soldier and stacked rifles against a blue and gray background. The half-fold paper broadside includes the signature of stamp designer Leonard Fellman and is printed '5-Cent / APPOMATTOX / "CIVIL WAR CENTENNIAL"' and "COMMEMORATIVE POSTAGE STAMP / AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL POST OFFICE / APRIL 10, 1965", followed by three paragraphs about the stamp.
