Dakota pipestone buffalo paperweight
A Dakota paperweight, circa the late 19th to early 20th century. The paperweight features a buffalo carved from red pipestone. The animal is shown crouching close to its rectangular base, suggesting that it is asleep or at rest. Incised marks indicate eyes and hide texture. A card affixed to the bottom of the carving's base reads, "Sleeping buffalo / Carved from pipestone by only Dakota Indian who does this kind of work - / (very rare) / Charles H. Bennett, Pharmacist / Pipestone City, MINN."
