He studied art at the Mills Academy and the St. Paul School of Art, both in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and in Europe. He opened his own gallery in St. Paul and also worked as an art conservator and appraiser.
