Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Alfred Henry Speltz was born on November 3, 1905. In 1924 he taught in a rural school and the next two years he was principal of the Altura Consolidated School. He decided to finish college at St. May's College and graduated in 1930. Then he went to grad school for two years at the University of Minnesota and started teaching as an assistant in educational psychology and taught in public schools for about ten years after that. Before he stopped teaching at Winona Senior High in 1939, Max Conrad talked Speltz into taking over the ground school in Winona. he and his wife started flying at the Conrad Airport and he received his student rating in 1939 and soloed that year, then received his private pilot's license in 1940. He managed the Max Conrad Flying School in 1941 and retired from the Winona public school system. He had instrument training at Honeywell in 1945 during World War II and was an instructor there in auto-pilot operation. In 1946 he became a civilian instructor both for the Navy and the Air Force. After the war he worked for Honeywell in the engineering branch and then taught Math for less than a year at Dunwoody and at St. Thomas in St. Paul for six years. Speltz and his wife lived in Winona and had six children. At the time of the interview he was a professor of statistics at the College of St. Teresa. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: This tape consists of Speltz's biographical background, introduction to aviation and connections with Max Conrad and his career as a teacher (1924) to the end of his career in aviation instructing (1943).
