Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Roy Vose was born in Marium Junction, Minnesota on March 14, 1918. As a small boy he had always dreamt of flying, and in junior high school began to take lessons from Tom Hennessy while working at the airport to pay for his lessons. He soloed in the fall of 1935, with Tom Hennessey and Max Conrad. He graduated form high school in 1936 and until 1939 did free lance art work, drove a taxi cab, and cooked to finance flying. From 1939 to 1942 he worked for Douglas Aircraft in California and returned to Winona early in 1943 to operate a flying service with Hillman Aarkare, while he waited for an overseas military assignment. He returned to Winona in 1946 and for six months flew for Hillman Aarkare. For a time he quit flying and worked as a draftsman at Badger Machine Company. In 1947 or 1948 he purchased a small restaurant business which he operated until 1958. He then began working for the city of Winona as City Sanitation Engineer, and was still in this position at the time of the interview. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Vose's biographical background, first interest in aviation and introduction to it with references to Max Conrad and his career form high school graduation (1935) to Army Corps (1942), Vose's Army Air Corps experience, World War II (China-Burma-India Theater), aviation as an occupation before and shortly after World War II (barnstorming, airlines, crop dusting, mail contracts) and air facilities in and around Winona.
