Minnesota Women's Press, Inc. Oral History Project: Interview with Marcia Appel
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Marcia was a member of the Advisory Board for the Minnesota Women's Press, Inc. (MWP), and was a columnist for the newspaper for several years. Based upon her earlier experiences with women's publications, she advised the founders of the company prior to its inception. Marcia was the founding editor of, and an investor in, an early regional women's magazine, Twin Cities Woman (TCW), which was formed in 1977. She has been a loyal reader and advocate for MWP for fifteen years. After receiving her degree from the University of Minnesota in 1974, Marcia worked in reporting and editing at the St. Paul Pioneer Press and Corporate Report Magazine. After TCW went out of business in 1980, she held a variety of communications positions, most recently as Senior Vice President of Corporate Advertising, Partnership Marketing and communications at Musicland Stores Corporation. She also served on several local boards and committees. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Early meeting with founders of Minnesota Women's Press, advising them of her experiences with TCW; the formation and operation of TCW; topics covered at TCW; differences between TCW and Minnesota Women's Press; difficulties that feminist publications experience; reactions of local press to feminist publications; Advisory Board experiences, including focus of efforts; women's discomfort with money and MWP's discomfort with profit; relationship of readers to feminist presses; topics and experiences in writing column for the Minnesota Women's Press; values and impact of the company.
