Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Mary Jo was the business manager of Minnesota Women's Press, Inc.(MWP) from January 1989 through October 1991. Prior to her involvement with MWP, she had worked in a family owned business and participated in volunteer work. She had also recently received a graduate degree in organizational leadership, and had a desire to work in a small organization whose focus was not necessarily profit oriented. At the time of the interview she was employed in church business administration. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Description of MWP during the difficult financial years of 1989-1991; offices in Security Building; early business practices; move to new facility on Raymond in St. Paul; financial issues; distribution issues and environment for free community newspapers; capitalization of company; relationships with suppliers; lack of employee specialization and job descriptions; MWP values and internal discussions about values; conflict between feminism and profit; employee relations; employment boundaries and job descriptions; importance of long term advertising contracts.
