Minnesota Women's Press, Inc. Oral History Project: Interview with Andy Steiner
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Andy Steiner had been involved with Minnesota Women's Press, Inc. (MWP) since 1990. She began her involvement as a freelance writer, and then moved on to become assistant editor, managing editor, and editor. She was the first editor of MWP to replace founding editor, Mollie Hoben. She continued to write columns for MWP on movies and the media. Andy had journalism degrees from Macalester College in St. Paul and Northwestern University in Chicago. At the time of the interview she worked at Utne Reader as senior editor. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Editorial processes and intent; role of assistant and managing editor; transition of Mollie Hoben as editor; MWP and profit/money; frugality of culture at MWP; importance of values in shaping MWP; feminism and MWP; staff communication; uses of resources by women's organizations; how working at MWP shapes the expectations and reactions to future work environments.
