Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Katie Fandrey grew up on a dairy farm in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. She attended high school in Whitehall, Wisconsin. She attended Ancker School of Nursing under the Cadet Nursing program and graduated in 1946. She retired from nursing in 1994 at the age of 69. She was an active member of the Ancker Nurses Alumni Association. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Initial interest in nursing, and why she chose Ancker to attend. Cadet Nursing program - costs, education prerequisites, commitment to serve upon graduation, wartime labor, equipment and supply shortages, Induction Ceremony. First impressions of Ancker School of Nursing, Social director, lobby, roommates. School expectations - social skills, how behavior infractions were handled. First impressions of Ancker Hospital - location, nurse's residence, benefits of city/county public facility, medications available. Probationary period for students, going to the University of Minnesota for basic science classes, acceptance letters, teachers as hospital staff, apprenticeship program - working in the hospital as students, uniforms, dress code, capping ceremony, pins, rotations, impression of Birgit Tofte, Miss Reynolds, Miss Sands, Miss Lubberts, Mrs. Sweeney, Dr. Broadie. Typical day and typical night for a student, student camaraderie, going to Moose Lake for psychiatric training, health care provided to ill nurses, Glee Club, sports, USO participation, Christmas party.
