Description BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Russell A. Boogren was born on the East Side of St. Paul and also educated in Minnesota. He owned Borgstrom Pharmacy on Payne Avenue beginning in the mid-1950s. The company also owned gifts shops and a pharmacy in White Bear Lake. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Boogren's early family life and family history. Working for Brown and Day Surgical Supply and the East Side Grocery as a teenager. Becoming a soda jerk at Borgstrom's Pharmacy at age 16 and eventually buying into the business. Descriptions of the competition on Payne Avenue and some information on the evolution of businesses in the area including Whirlpool. Comparisons of the pharmacy business between the 1950s and the 1990s. An anecdote about Al Berquist. Some detail on the soda fountain business in the store. Comments on how Borgstrom's was able to survive the influx of national chains. Borgstrom's personality. The role of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association in the pharmacies of the 1960s. The condition of the neighborhood in 1991 and what is being done to improve it. Some descriptions of pictures of the neighborhood.
