Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Aden Amil Awil and his family are Somali refugees who moved to Minnesota in the mid-1990s. Awil, educated in England and a former government official in Somalia, at the time of the interview worked for the Minneapolis Public Schools. Also interviewed were his wife, Safia Abdullahi, and children, Mohamed Amin, Mahamoud Amin, Ahmed Amin, Mona Amin, Filsan Amin and Amin Amin. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Aden Amin Awil: first impressions of Minnesota; starting over and adjusting to life in Minnesotal ;ife in Mogadishu, Somalia before the war; religious, social and cultural events in pre-war Somalia; celebrating national holidays in Somalia; experiences during the civil war in Somalia as a refugee in Somalia and Ethiopia; visa process; the journey to Minnesota; becoming established in Minnesota; the Somali community in Minnesota; mosques and the Islamic Center; gratitude for being in America; maintaining Somali and African culture; thoughts of future of Somali and Somalis here and abroad. Mohomed Amin (oldest son): school in Minnesota; first impressions of Minnesota; differences between American and Somali cultures; bullies in school; weather; relatives; future plans. The younger children speak briefly about school experiences, peer relations, and future plans. COMMENTS ON INTERVIEW: The interview was conducted as part of a series to develop curriculum to help school age children understand immigrant experiences.
