Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Smith started visiting the park with his wife in 1938 and moved to the area in 1948 to farm. After he retired from farming, Smith worked in the park for 19 years. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Putting in the sewer lines at Squaw Lake Camp; keeping the camp clean, custodial work at the camp; the loss of wild game in the park over the years; planting pines versus preserving the deer herd; improvements in toilets and garbage pick-up over the years; the ice operation on Lake Itasca; the selling of firewood in the park; heavy use of the park and shoreline erosion; park versus wildlife preserve issues.
